Programming...continued

The 1997 RSLs covered events all over South Leicestershire bringing many more towns and villages into focus. There was extensive coverage of arts and events and over 150 guests attended the stations over the two broadcasts. Live outside broadcasts came from Oadby & Wigston streets, Leicester's Abbey Park vintage vehicle rally, Leicester City football ground and local rugby fixtures, with phone-ins from other events, including Radio 1 Roadshow and the 'Adults v Kidz Laser War' organised by the Takeover Radio (tm) children's show.

Local historical stories, many unfamiliar to even long standing residents amongst our listeners were produced by our Features Editor Colette Hall, meticulously researching records and tales from individuals and community institutions. Our "Town Crier" feature (with real Town Crier) created opportunities for Community groups to advertise their events or requirements for volunteers, finance, resources and assistance. Through our "Now Hear This" and "On the Valley" Helplines we offered free advertising promotion and airtime for charities and community groups. Our Wigston high street style premises became a viable and effective community centre for the month of May 1997, showing tremendous local support.

Speech programming was well represented with a balance of chat/interviews, topical debate, talk shows, phone-ins on a range of topics and guests from local groups, charities, community associations, local authorities, police, ambulance and other services, together with many single issue interest groups and others from a fascinating variety of occupations. Civic heads and representatives attended to discuss local matters, and a range of specialist guests provided advice and guidance on a huge range of subjects from first aid and educational opportunities to cooking and motorcycle maintenance.

Daytime music and formats, including well known former local ILR presenters, provided familiar voices and personalities. Evenings and weekends featured more variety. Presenters produced shows for both stations showcased on our overnight Jukebox. Listeners phoned in many hundreds of music requests, competition entries and dedications or attended our radio shop to collect schedules or just drop in for a chat. We sold over 100 NOW fm T-shirts in 28 days. Many now say how they miss their local stations.
