Following the press release by the Radio Authority that the former Hinckley small scale licence due to be anounced in August 1997 was to be extended into an alternative location licence including Market Harborough and areas of South Leicestershire, a second broadcast was also planned for April 1997 preceeding the launch of . The very next day after Valley's 2nd 28 day broadcast ended was launched. From high street style premises the new station broadcast for a further 28 days to an area in excess of 40,000 listeners, many of whom in surrounding villages being able to receive both stations. Considerable funds were raised for the Mayor's charity and to support local hospital radio groups in their efforts.

In September 1996, radio promoter Philip Solo created the first energetic and exciting new venture in children's radio in UK history. Working with three Leicester schoolchildren, aged 9, 11, and 13, Philip Solo created the first true UK 'kidz' radio station, Takeover Radio, run entirely by children. For their first ever broadcast they took over a show on , as . Throughout May 1997 the trio returned to the airwaves with shows for 'kidz only', writing, producing, and presenting their own material, training other children and gaining extensive publicity. Training at Hospital Radio Fox 'the kidz' conducted their own sales campaign to over 100 target companies, raising over £700 advertising & sponsorship revenue for charity.
The trio became involved in a National Children's Radio campaign run by former TV broadcaster Susan Stranks.Throughout its history since 1996, TV, radio and press appearances for Takeover Radio became commonplace. The group has major sponsors including Golden Wonder, Megazone Laser, and Domino's Pizza and the kidz have had many exciting trips and adventures as well as learning, working, planning and performing on air. If you are aged 9-14 and want to join the club, read on.
The group is still working with Susan Stranks, and members made their own speeches in a House of Lords Committee meeting on Children's Radio, chaired by the Baroness Warnock in 1998. In June 2000, the teams completed their 5th series of two hour weekend radio shows on local radio stations, entirely written, produced and presented by children aged 8-14.In August 2000, the children held the first ever RSL broadcast entirely run, presented and managed by children, live on air for 9 days in Leicestershire. Though the 3 founding children have now left the area to live elsewhere and are all teenage adults their legacy lives on! is now a fully fledged working children's radio group with a membership which has encompassed hundreds of children between 8-16. Philip Solo became very well known in kids radio as an inspirational pioneer of childrens freedoms and rights to broadcast and their abilities to run their own real 'kidz business' with serious sponsors. Philip personally funded and led the Takeover Radio project with Graham Coley of Hospital Radio Fox for 7 years and aided by a team of adult volunteers and ever expanding numbers of child presenters they are now a unique example of a working children's charity and media group. Having been the first kids station to have moved onto the internet Philip's pioneering leadership and Graham's patient management led the group to win one of the first 12 Pilot Access FM full time Radio Licences in the UK in 2002. IN July 2005 the since award-winning Takeover Radio station won a 5 year FM full time Community Radio Licence- a unique and unequalled event in children's radio history
